We’ve made it through the first week. And by “we” I mean the five guys who have decided to take up the challenge to go without beer until Christmas.

I think we all understand that deprivation is not the answer. It’s like a radical diet that you do for a short period of time before returning to the same old, same old. And your weight fluctuates right along with it. Experts tell us this is the wrong approach, and they’re right. But for me, sacrificing beer for a few months is a good reminder of making better choices for my waistline. And let’s face it, without the beer, I’m bound to drop a couple pounds. I’m also trying harder to get moving at least once a day. Sitting around and talking just doesn’t do much to increase my heart rate. Well, unless Jennifer says something that frustrates me. But that’s another story…

So far this week, I attended the Kitchener Rangers golf tournament where the first thing I was handed was a beer ticket. I didn’t use it! Then there was a burger at lunch, without an accompanying beer. And finally, I helped friends move a fridge…and at the end? No beer. We all know how good a beer tastes after some good ol’ manual labour but I resisted the temptation.

As you can see in the picture above, Shawn has also done the beerless burger lunch. So maybe we still have some cleaning up to do on our overall diets. But we’re taking steps. We’ve also welcomed Tom to the team, so we’ve got me, Shawn, Tom, Chad, and Karl on-board. Anyone else willing to accept the challenge is welcome to join! As an added incentive, there are now only 111 days until Christmas. :)

Stay tuned here for our progress updates.
